if there are not enough players online in one games, it's hard to reflect the advantage of online games and therefore it will lose much interesting. however, those less-populated servers in the wow have been facing these problems all the time. it is difficult for players to organize teams and get wow gold sell, and the shortage of source materials in the ah leads to the lag of server schedule in general.

due to the severs' names in the wow are taken after the famous characters or places or items in the wow, some servers are of great memories. more importantly, some players do not expect their characters being changed because of transferring in servers, which suggested the reason that it's not suitable for the traditional merging servers.

while, the new function connected realms in the 5.4 patch means to solve these difficulties.
first of all, the category of the servers must be the same, the connection between pvp or pve. but as for the same character names, the sames cross-realm battlefield and random teams, characters in different servers will be marked specially on the names, which means players wouldn't be upset with the character names and can enjoy a more active gaming environment at the same time.

let's imagine the situation once the connected realms is online. the severs with less players will be connected based on some rules such as total population and camp balance. thus, taking view from the players, they will see more players online, much more abundant source and materials in the auction house, easier to make teams for activities.

as long as enough players online, there will form a great recycle in the game system, such as players can earn more gold and the materials we needed will be increasing, while it will consume many supplies to participating team activities (mixture, solution and food), thus the players' equipment has been enhanced generally and the whole game develops towards a good direction.
